The Petőfi Museum is the museum centre of Pest county’s northeastern sub-region, rich in both historical and ethnographical relics, a landscape museum. The institution is located on the premises of the former Lutheran grammar school, built in 1769-1771. Between 1835-1838 the national poet of the 1848-49 Hungarian War of Independence, Sándor Petőfi, was a pupil of this school. This museum owns a rich archaeological collection, an ethnographical collection that holds relics of the region’s traditional costume and folk art, and an impressive historical collection (within which literature and school history can also be explored). With its temporary exhibitions, two periodicals published regularly, the museum plays a leading role in the art and cultural life of the region. |
